Frequently asked questions
Where does the data come from?
The U.S. Department of Education's IPEDS surveys (public domain) and state higher-education reports, each cited where it's used. See the methodology.
Why is the data from 2022-23?
IPEDS financial aid data is released about two years after the aid year. State reports on the costs page cover the current year.
Does a big gap mean a college will cut my aid?
No. It's an average across students, including transfers and part-time students. Ask the college which grants renew and on what terms.
What is a "traditional 4-year college"?
One where no more than 25% of undergraduates are part-time and no more than 25% are fully online. Details.
Is this advice?
No. FourYearCost presents public data. It doesn't recommend colleges or loans.
